{"id":1079,"date":"2014-02-05T17:22:12","date_gmt":"2014-02-05T23:22:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kristendembroski.com\/?p=1079"},"modified":"2014-02-07T19:33:35","modified_gmt":"2014-02-08T01:33:35","slug":"the-book-versus-the-movie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.kristendembroski.com\/?p=1079","title":{"rendered":"The Book versus The Movie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week, we are reading <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Night-Shift-Stephen-King\/dp\/0307743640\/ref=dp_return_2?ie=UTF8&amp;n=283155&amp;s=books\">&#8220;Battleground&#8221; by Stephen King<\/a>\u00a0(a short story from his novel <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Night Shift<\/span>).\u00a0After we do a close reading and discussion of the story, identifying elements of literature and analyzing the author&#8217;s craft, we will also watch the video adaptation from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Nightmares-Dreamscapes-From-Stories-Stephen\/dp\/B000GYI340\/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1391640215&amp;sr=8-3&amp;keywords=nightmares+and+dreamscapes\">Nightmares &amp; Dreamscapes<\/a>. Comparing the short story to the movie adaptation helps us to reach several Common Core State Standards, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>RL.8.3 Key Ideas and Details: <\/b><b>Analyze how particular lines of dialogue or incidents in a story or drama propel the action, reveal aspects of a character, or provoke a decision.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>RL.8.5 Craft and Structure: <\/b><b>Compare and contrast the structure of two or more texts and analyze how the differing structure of each text contributes to its meaning and style.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>RL.8.7 Integration of Knowledge and Ideas: <\/b><b>Analyze the extent to which a filmed or live production of a story or drama stays faithful to or departs from the text or script, evaluating the choices made by the director or actors.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To prepare my students for comparing and contrasting the short story \/ movie, I give them the following handout. This usually sparks a very lively discussion about books versus movies. Identify one significant way in which the director &#8216;stayed true&#8217; to King&#8217;s version.<br \/>\n2. Explain why you think the director chose to &#8216;stay true&#8217; to the short story for this.<br \/>\n3. Identify one significant way in which the director departed from King&#8217;s version.<br \/>\n4.
